Cedega
TransGaming's flagship product, Cedega, is a proprietary fork of Wine for running Microsoft Windows games on Linux.
There are games that run on Cedega but not on Wine, and games that run on Wine but not Cedega. Users that want to play a specific game usually look for it on the databases that both projects keep.
The source code for the program is available, but there are restrictions on redistribution that make it non-free software. The Gentoo Linux distribution, for example, has been compelled by Transgaming to remove from their package manager scripts to download the source and installing in an automatic manner.
Controversy about Origins of Code
It has been suggested that the portability code being used by Transgaming has, by and large, been copied from Corel's "MacPort" portability layer which was developed by Corel Corporation in the late 1990's to facilitate the porting of Corel's Windows based applications to the Apple Macintosh. Corel Draw versions 6 and 8 as well as Corel Photopaint for the Macintosh were all based on Corel's Macport portability layer, while former Corel employees involved with Macport now work for Transgaming.
Cider
The company has recently made available a new product called Cider which is a technology marketed towards developers that allows Windows games to run on Mac OS X. It shares much of the same core technology as Cedega but is designed for video game designers and publishers. Due to the increase in demand for Apple computers, the company is experiencing above average growth.Fact: date=October 2007
At the 2007 World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC07), Electronic Arts announced their return to the Mac, publishing various titles simultaneously on both PCs and Macs, using Cider on the Mac.
In a newsletter dated 2007-11-13, the company announced that Cider will be merging back into Cedega.
SwiftShader
SwiftShader is an advanced software renderer with Direct3D 8/9 class features, including shaders.
GameTree Online
GameTreeOnline.com was launched in Beta, March 2008, with a focus to offer the Mac gaming community an online retail distribution point for published Mac titles.
Digital Rights Management (DRM)
In a press release dated 2008-08-20, TransGaming announced that they "will utilize Sony DADC's SecuROM digital rights management (DRM) solution for all video game titles enabled through TransGaming's Cider portability engine for Mac games." TransGaming's use of SecuROM is notable because of the company's decision to use SecuROM technology for all Mac games enabled through Cider, irrespective of distribution channel (download vs. retail) and whether SecuROM was used for a game's Windows PC release.
