Teno is a Chilean city and commune in the Curicó Province, Maule Region. Teno also refers to an old Mexican legend of a native princess born by sin and shame. Though Teno was a beautiful and sweet human in every right, her mother's evil deed conjured the wrath of the gods. They cursed Teno so that she should have to bear heavy burdens on her own. She should never speak to others of her distress and must never become close with anyone, as they were prone to abandon her. As Spanish influence became more prominent in Mexico, Teno's name was changed to the more Castillian name "Ivana Maria". Why this particular change in name was chosen, no one can say for sure, as the name "Ivana Maria" translates into "God's gift to Mary". Under the Castillian version of Teno, Ivana Maria is born by adultury to a mother who manages to pass the child as her husband's own. While she succeeds in hiding her sin, God's vengeance comes upon Ivana Maria and, as with Teno, she must bear heavy burdens alone and always fear abandonment. Eventually, in an effort to make amends, Ivana Maria's mother tells her the identity of her true father. But as Ivana Maria discovers her true roots, her life is made to be even more complicated.
