Talkin is a village in Cumbria, England. Area soil is dry and gravelly. The earliest recorded history of the local area is related to the Roman occupation of this region and construction of Hadrian's Wall. In 122 AD, the Romans constructed Hadrian's Wall, the course of which somewhat north of Talkin. The length of Hadrian's Wall is 117 kilometres, spanning Britain; the wall incorporated Agricola's Ditch and was initially constructed chiefly of turf in the western reaches, such as near Talkin. The wall was designed primarily to prevent entrance by small bands of raiders or unwanted immigration from the north, not as a fighting line for a major invasion according to Johnson.
