Respect is the acknowledgment that someone or something has value; the showing of thoughtfullness and consideration; to refrain from intruding upon or interfering with: to respect a person's privacy; to relate or have reference to.

Synonyms: 1. regard, feature, matter. 2. regard, connection. 3. estimation, reverence, homage, honor. Respect, esteem, veneration imply recognition of personal qualities by approbation, deference, and more or less affection. Respect is commonly the result of admiration and approbation, together with deference: to feel respect for a great scholar. Esteem is deference combined with admiration and often with affection: to hold a friend in great esteem. Veneration is an almost religious attitude of deep respect, reverence, and love, such as we feel for persons or things of outstanding superiority, endeared by long association: veneration for one's grandparents, for noble traditions. 7. bias, preference. 9. revere, venerate, consider, admire. 10. heed. Can be showen like Respect for one's self, for others, and property.

In language

Human languages typically portray grammatical distinctions to the listener between honorific and colloquial language. These distinctions may be grammatically encoded by a regular system of verb and noun affixes. In Japan for example, language is used to show respect between children and parents or between husband and wife.

In body language

Human cultures have varied ways of showing respect by bodily actions. In many European cultures, people shake hands. In others, such as in Japan people bow at the waist when meeting.Physical Respect Frequently, gender is a factor in how respect is displayed in bodily behavior. For example, women in many Westultures traditionally curtsy, whereas men bow.

Military

As a sign of respect in almost any form of the military is a salute. A salute is used by enlistees to show respect to officers (and vice-versa; to not return a salute to a subordinate is considered offensive) and by officers to those of higher rank. The 21-gun salute is done within the military for funerals of military members and for high-ranking civilians such as the President.

In organized crime
