Here is what users have to say about Rancheros

The Spanish, and later the Mexican, government encouraged settlement of Alta California by the establishment of large land grants, which were turned into ranchos, devoted to the raising of cattle and sheep. The owners of these ranchos patterned themselves after the landed gentry in Spain. Their workers included some Native Americans who had learned to speak Spanish and to ride horses. Of the 800-plus grants, Spain made about 30. The remainder were granted by Mexico. The ranchos established land-use patterns that are recognizable in the California of today.
