The company manufacturers and sells Telepresence, Videoconferencing, and Voice Communications solutions.
Company History 1990
Polycom was co-founded in 1990 by Brian Hinman and Jeffrey Rodman, who were colleagues at PictureTel when they decided to form Polycom. The company's vision was to support human interactive communication via all modalities, a vision that saw implementation through a strategy of first entering the audio conferencing arena, then graphics conferencing, then video, and finally network coordination and management.
Seed investment was provided by Hinman, with venture capital participation following from Oak and Accel. The company staffing grew to about 20 by September 1991, and development of the underlying technologies led to the first full-duplex business speakerphone, SoundStation®, introduced in October 1992.
Acquisitions
Polycom's development occurred both organically (by internal means), and by acquisition of other companies. Acquisitions, business of the acquired company, and the year they occurred are below:
January 1998 - ViaVideo (appliance-based video communications systems)
December 1999 - Atlas Communications Engines, Inc. (integrated access device and DSL routers)
February 2001 - Accord Networks
October 2001 - PictureTel (PC-based video communications systems)
December 2001 - ASPI Digital (installed voice systems)
June 2002 - MeetU (web collaboration software)
January 2003 - VCAS software from AGT (video scheduling and management software)
January 2004 - Voyant Technologies (voice conferencing and collaboration network solutions)
August 2005 - DST Media (China-based video networking company)
January 2007 - Destiny Conferencing (immersive telepresence)
March 2007 - SpectraLink and KIRK telecom (workplace wireless telephony)
Company Product Trajectory
Polycom's first products to market were audio conferencing speakerphones. Soon after, the company added content sharing, video conferencing, and video network/bridging products to its portfolio.
Company Name and Company Logo
The company name was created through an exchange between Rodman and Hinman over a period of several days. The two selected "Polycom" due to its brevity, interest, and reflection of the company vision of all human communication modes. As with the company name, the logo symbolizes the multiple modes of human communication: speech, visual, and graphic. The connecting triangle conveys the unification of these, and also their oversight and coordination via network management, bridging, and monitoring.
Polycom Audio and Voice
The first SoundStation conference phone shipped in 1992. The original SoundStation was followed by versions offering extended performance (SoundStation Premier, Premier Satellite, SoundStation EX). The SoundStation first shipped internationally (to the UK) in 1993, followed by other products and an expanding list of countries.
