Midwifery is a health care profession in which providers give prenatal care to expecting mothers, attend the birth of the infant, and provide postpartum care to the mother and her infant. A practitioner of midwifery is known as a midwife, a term used in reference to both women and men. (The etymology of midwife is Middle English mid = with and Old English wif = woman). In the United States, nurse-midwives (see below) are advance practice nurses (nurse practitioners]). In addition to giving care to women in connection with pregnancy and birth, they also provide primary care to women, well-woman care (gynecological annual exams), family planning, and menopause care.
