Definition
Although there is some speculation of the exact definition, the original Irish Gaelic spelling is Ó Fearghail, and is most commonly believed to mean "Man of Valor."
The English pronunciation of the name is obviously different, and has many different spelling, which is attributed to common mistakes made by Ellis Island Immigration employees, at which time it was not custom to ask one the spelling of a common name, but simply write down as it was perceived to be spelled. This led to common mistakes such as: Ferrell, Ferrel, Farrell, Farrel, Ferrill, and Ferril. Some of the much less common mistakes include: Farrelly, Fraleigh, Frawley, Frahill as well as many others.
