Chelation is defined by IUPAC as "the formation or presence of bonds (or other attractive interactions) between two or more separate binding sites within the same ligand and a single central atom."IUPAC Gold Book. 1 Usually these ligands are organic compounds, and are called chelants, chelators, chelating agents, or sequestering agents. Chelants, according to ASTM-A-380, are "chemicals that form soluble, complex molecules with certain metal ions, inactivating the ions so that they cannot normally react with other elements or ions to produce precipitates or scale." The ligand forms a chelate complex with the substrate. The term is reserved for complexes in which the metal ion is bound to two or more atoms of the chelant.
