What is Cellulosic Ethanol?

Ethanol was once widely viewed as a renewable alternative to petroleum products. Internal combustion engines (cars, trucks, etc.) can burn ethanol (ethyl alcohol) in place of gasoline or in a mix that includes gasoline.

Ethanol was originally made by fermenting corn and distilling the product. This has become problematic for a number of reasons - including the stress it places on the international food suplly. Cellulosic ethanol is produced from cellulose, the main component of wood, straw and much of the structure of plants. In other words, it's made from the stuff we don't eat.

Cellulosic ethanol looks set to eventually replace corn-based ethanol as an energy source. It may become a major focus of energy policy in the U.S. in the next few years.
