Boost Mobile is an Irvine, California-based brand of mobile phone service launched in Australia (Over Optus) in 2000 and in New Zealand (Over Telecom New Zealand) in 2001.
History

At the end of 2006, Boost launched its Unlimited by Boost Mobile Service. The service offered unlimited talk for $50 plus taxes per month; unlimited talk and text for $60 plus taxes per month; and unlimited talk, text, & wireless web for $70 plus taxes a month. Generally, Unlimited by Boost Mobile usage is limited to the local geographic region, home calling areas, where the account holder resides, and national roaming charges, 15 cents per minute, apply outside this area. Unlimited by Boost Mobile plans are designed to compete with other local market unlimited prepaid carriers such as MetroPCS and Cricket Wireless under same terms and business models.
To further compete with Nationwide Unlimited offerings from competitors Metro PCS and Cricket Wireless, on January 15, 2009, Boost Mobile announced that it would launch its own version of Nationwide Unlimited for a flat rate of $50. The new unlimited plan resulted in a net gain of 764,000 customers in less than three months, which helped to mitigate but did not completely offset the company's (gross) loss of 1.25 million contract subscriptions, which are more lucrative. The resulting spike in the Boost unlimited service caused delays of several hours for text messages. The new service runs on the Sprint Nextel iDEN network, which previously was best known for its walkie-talkie feature. A Boost spokesman said that they did not anticipate the level of popularity for the new service, and that efforts to improve the network were underway.
