Sarawak is Malaysia's largest state. It has a population of about 2.5 million. The capital city, Kuching, has a population of just under 600,000. (Kuching translates from Malay as "cat.")

Sarawak is ethnically diverse. About 29% of the population is Chinese (a diverse community in its own right); 21% is Malay. Ibans constitute the largest ethnic group at 30% of the population. Melanaus are considered to be the area's original inhabitants. There are at least 35 other ethnic minorities, many living a tribal lifestyle.

Sarawak is an incredibly rich natural environment. Tourism is a major industry.
